Mixed Review for Colorado State Win

Alabama improved it’s offensive efficiency and played surprisingly well on special teams to give Alabama the comfortable win but defensive issues continue to haunt the Tide.  Additionally another valuable player was lost for the season with an ACL Tear.

Offensively we saw Jalen Hurts spread the ball around a little more.  It was especially electrifying to see  Robert Foster get his hands on a pass and absolutely smoke everyone for 6.   That was one of the most impressive RAC’s I’ve seen in a long long time.   The nice over the shoulder catch by true freshman DeVonta Smith also bodes well for his future.  Smith was scheduled to redshirt but appears to be too good to leave on the bench.

On the subject of redshirting it appears Running Back Brian Robinson is headed for one along with QB Mack Jones, WR Tyrell Shavers & Chad Townsend.  Tight Ends Major Tennison and Kendrick James were headed for one but with the season ending injury to Miller Forrestall they may explore taking one of them out of the pot.   It’s more likely Ronnie Clark will see a bigger roll instead.  Defensively a pair of lineman Phil Mathis and LaBryan Ray appear to be headed for a redshirt as well as LB Vandarous Cowan who has battled an injury all fall.

Defensively Colorado State was not the best night for the Tide.  After stumping them for the first quarter  Alabama essentially got their butts handed to them for 3 quarters.   The game was never close because the offense continued to be productive and did NOT turn it over while Colorado State threw two costly interceptions,  one of which was almost a pick 6 but was later put in by the offense.    Statistically the turnovers are all that kept this game from becoming a fourth quarter squeaker.    Most disturbingly senior running back Dayln Dawkins,  all 5′ 9″ 185 lbs of him gashed Alabama’s front seven for 5.9 yards per carry.   For Alabama this is like something from the Mike Dubose era.   Alabama continued to rest injured linebackers Anfernee Jennings and Rashaan Evans but the truth is Colorado State took it to Alabama physically and Alabama never responded.    Nick Saban’s fury was substantial as he inserted the starting offense back in the game for the final drive just to make sure Colorado State didn’t get another chance to humiliate his players.    They really do need a come to Jesus meeting because next week begins SEC play and similar play will get you beat most weeks in the SEC.  It’s one thing to get beat by a faster guy,  it’s entirely different to get run over by someone because you weren’t ready to play football and that’s exactly what happened to Alabama.

Next up is Vandy.  It’s been a while since we have played the Commodores but just to update you they have an efficient Quarterback and the nations 10th best defense.    Where is Alabama’s defense you ask?   Well after this latest crap fest they are currently 50th in the nation.     It’s early in the season yes,  but suffice it to say that Alabama has a LONG way to go defensively.    Inside the Vandy number is the fact they are ranked 8th in pass defense, not as much in rush defense so look for the Tide to try to establish the running game at some point in this game to keep their struggling defense off the field as much as possible.    It’s also worth a note that after living off of them last season Alabama has yet to score a non offensive touchdown.    It appears the entire season rests in the hands of one young man named Jalen Hurts.
