A-Day Rosters are out

Alabama released the A-Day rosters which contain some information to speculate on. There was very little change as far as unexpected players moving up or down. but here are the few tidbits by position.

QB: Blake Sims solidified his hold of the #2 spot behind McCarron and likely will hold that until someone beats him out. There is a real chance he could be our opening day starter in 2014. We will see who gets the call after him Saturday.

RB: Kenyan Drake took the #2 spot behind Yeldon by default because no other healthy runners made it this far. He will have a whole new battle come fall.

WR: Starters appear to be Cooper, Bell, and Chris Jones. Second unit is likely Norwood, Black and Deandrew White. This may be in flux all year especially when Norwood returns from injury.

TE: Vogler wins the regular job and it looks like Fowler will be the starting Hback. We should see plenty of OJ Howard though since Fowler is in a black jersey.

OL: the OL has stayed static from day one two deep. The only news here appears to indicate that the starters are doing well.

DB: I guess by now we should never count out Vinnie Sunsuri as he has once again beaten the odds to win a starting job. He will never be safe however with Landon Collins nipping at his heals. Geno Smith appears to have held off a challenge for the top corner job from Cyrus Jones.

DL: like the offensive line this unit has been static all spring but they don’t appear to have had as good a spring as the OL.

LB: The linebacking corps is more or less missing this spring. Only one starter Adrian Hubbard remains. Denzel Devall was a co-starter last year and the rest are young players who are going to struggle. They do have senior Tana Patrick. He needs a big day to secure some playing time in his final season.

Specialists: the punter from last season returns and has improved steadily the last two seasons. Alabama has two place kickers battling for the job so each field goal attempt could be crucial.

I’ll be looking closely at the defensive line. If the starting unit can’t whip the second unit OL pretty good I’ll go ahead and mark this as a big concern for the coming season. I’m also going to look closely at Dalvin Tomlinson and LaMichael Fanning to see if these two players are ready to make contributions.
